Physical Activity & Health Across the Lifespan

Charlotte leads an NIH-R01 project called SKyRoCKeT. This study identifies cadence rates in children, adolescents, and adults associated with good health and reduced disease risk. Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke and Daheia Barr-Anderson are experts in physical activity and health. The outcomes of this work will yield measurable activity recommendations that can be used by clinicians, schools, and public health officials to monitor and recommend positive health benefits.
- Dr. Barr-Anderson is the Dean W. Colvard Distinguished Professor whose research focuses on physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and obesity prevention in children and adults. She serves on the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Council advises, consults, and makes recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Director of the NACCIH. This nomination demonstrates NIH’s recognition of Daheia’s research and service contributions to healthy living through physical activity.
- Dr. Emma Zuk is an expert on barriers and facilitators of physical activity in girls, especially within low socioeconomic communities. Dr. Zuk has an extensive background in athletic training, public health, and exercise science and, as a result, is a leading investigator into social determinants of physical activity in children and youth.
- Dr. Reuben Howden is an internationally recognized expert on isometric exercise and blood pressure. Dr. Howden serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies researching cardiovascular function and he chairs many theses and dissertations within and outside the department.
- Dr. Trudy Moore-Harrison directs the Health Risk Assessment Lab where she manages campus testing facilities and and directs all community assessments. Through this program, Dr. Moore-Harrison and her team conduct 4 health screenings per year across 8 Charlotte-community sites in order to examine longitudinal changes in cardiovascular health, physical function, and movement. She is a Co-PI on the Department’s SkyRocket grant and she leads the Senior Citizen Outreach Program through funding by the Sharon at SouthPark and Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation.
